Real-Life Martial Arts Moves in Baki
If you're a fan of anime and manga, you may have heard of Baki, a franchise that depicts a variety of martial arts as well as gruesome battles and bizarre characters. While some of the moves and feats in Baki are exaggerated or even unrealistic, many of them are based on actual martial arts techniques or concepts. In fact, the creators of Baki have consulted or trained with real martial artists.
Here are five examples of Baki moves that have real counterparts:
- Specified Kill (Kime Waza) - a technique that aims to instantly deliver a powerful strike or throw to a vulnerable target, often involving the use of the hips and the whole body. This move is similar to the hip throw in judo, where the attacker sweeps the opponent's leg and throws them over their hip with force. However, in Baki, the attacker may also hit the opponent's pressure points or organs with precision.
- Flash Karate - a style that emphasizes speed, agility, and timing, and that involves rapid-fire punches, kicks, and blocks. This style is similar to Kyokushin karate, which also emphasizes full-contact sparring and physical conditioning. However, Flash Karate in Baki also incorporates snake-like movements and deception, making it a more elusive and unpredictable style.
- Iron Hand (Tetsu Te) - a technique that trains the hands and fingers to become harder and more resistant to damage, in order to increase the power and effectiveness of strikes. This technique is often associated with Shaolin kung fu and Okinawan karate, where practitioners perform various drills and exercises to toughen their hands. In Baki, Iron Hand is taken to extreme levels, where the users can break bones and objects with their bare hands.
- Shadowboxing (Mitate Shodan) - a practice that involves visualizing and mimicking an opponent's movements and reactions, in order to prepare for a real fight and develop one's own abilities. This practice is common in many martial arts, especially those that involve sparring or self-defense. In Baki, Shadowboxing is shown as a mental challenge as well, where the protagonist faces his own doubts and fears in his mind while he trains physically.
- Dry Cleaning - a technique that combines grappling, submission, and strangulation techniques, and that focuses on immobilizing and neutralizing one's opponent without causing severe injury or death. This technique is similar to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which also emphasizes ground fighting and leverage. However, in Baki, Dry Cleaning also involves creative uses of clothing and accessories as weapons, such as choking someone with a tie or wrapping them in a suit.
Of course, before you try any of these moves in real life, make sure you have proper training, safety equipment, and permission from your training partner or teacher. And remember, martial arts should not be used to bully, harm, or intimidate others, but rather to promote respect, discipline, and integrity.
